Justin B. Starren, MD, PhD

Professor, Medical Imaging
Director, Center for Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics (CB2)

Justin Starren, MD, PhD, FACMI, is a tenured Professor of Medical Imaging and serves as the Director for the Center of Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.

Dr. Starren is an exceptional professor, researcher and data scientist with more than 30 years of experience in biomedical informatics. His research focuses on the translation of computer and informatics research into real-world solutions. This has included both work in Human Computer Interaction and delivering information technology to underserved populations.

Dr. Starren is widely known for his work on the Informatics for Diabetes Education and Telemedicine (IDEATel) Project. He served as Co-Principal Investigator and chief technology architect for the Informatics for Diabetes Education and Telemedicine Project (IDEATel). He is also applauded for his work leading the EHR integration workgroup of the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) project which focused on the integration of genomic data into the EHR to support precision medicine. Dr. Starren led a nine-site consortium integrating patient reported outcomes data into EHRs: EHR Access to Seamless Integration of PROMIS (EASI-PRO). His current research involves exploring the ethical issues involved with technology-enabled research data collection during clinical encounters.

A summa cum laude biology graduate of Washington University, Dr. Starren stayed on for medical school, also earning a master’s degree in the combined program in immunogenetics. After completing those degrees, he completed an internship in internal medicine at UCLA Sepulveda. Then it was off to New York for radiology residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, which he pursued for two years before trying his hand as Medical Director with the PA Consulting Group.

Dr. Starren returned to Columbia University joining the postdoctoral informatics program and completed his PhD degree. Upon completing his doctorate, Dr. Starren accepted a faculty position at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Starren went on to serve as Director of Biomedical Informatics Research Center and Tenured Senior Research Scientist at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation. Subsequently, Dr. Starren was recruited by Northwestern University where he served as Professor and Division Chief of Health and Biomedical Informatics. He also served as Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (CBIDS) and Deputy Director, Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS).

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Starren to the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
